A few different Kinect projects…

Here are a couple of different Kinect projects that are ongoing in the world and interest us… CMU researchers and Microsoft have been working on “OmniTouch” a project that makes any surface a screen:

Here is a similar-seeming hack that’s a mashup of Android-Kinect in a larger projector interface. Now if only we could find interns who could do a hack like this (we are looking for software + hardware engineering interns, by the way)…

With this project, we’re sensing that the hologram scene from Star Wars is coming closer and closer to reality. “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi, you’re my only hope…”

Proliferation of Kinect Development

Type “kinect” into Slashdot and you can see just how much the Kinect technology is really kickstarting a lot of cool projects in the computer vision and robotics space. Here are some links that are interesting for us and, of course, more Kinect video stalking. Kinect gesture recognition has an open source project and here’s a great video detailing how the Kinect body-tracking algorithm works (see this for more links to papers and more detailed explanations):

SLAM and Kinects for 3d modeling of a robot’s world

Here’s a video discussing how the Kinect camera (designed for Xbox 360) can be used with robots and SLAM to create real-time 3d modeling of a robot’s surroundings. (Head here for the full article.) It’s pretty cool. The project was created by Philipp Robbel (a PhD student with MIT’s Personal Robots Group) who used iRobot’s “Create” machines. It’s interesting and gets the idea across well.

Lego robotic manufacturing

This is a great video of an automated manufacturing line made entirely with legos. Not quite what we do at Occam (we’re in the middle of welding one of the iterations for our product — which is a little more dangerous). But it’s still an awesome video. (Head here, for the full article.)
